Coach Mecate is in his 26th year of coaching at Imperial Valley College and his 20th as head coach. He played two years (1981, 1982) at Rio Hondo Community College in Whittier California where he was drafted by the Kansas City Royals, was a scholar athlete and a captain of the team (82). He then transferred to Brigham Young University on scholarship (1983, 1984) where he was also a scholar athlete and captain of the team (84). In 1983 his BYU Baseball Team finished the regular season as the # 1 ranked team in the NCAA Division 1. Six players from that team eventually played in the Major Leagues. Following his playing career, Coach Mecate was the head coach for the BYU JV Baseball Team for 2 years. He then coached at Calipatria High School for eight more years (six as head coach) before coming to IVC in 1996. In Coach Mecate’s 26 years at IVC he has coached numerous baseball players that have moved onto professional baseball and/or to the 4 year college including from the 2020 team, Robert Brodell (scholarship from San Diego State University).
