Softball continued conference play on March 2nd, with a home doubleheader vs San Diego Mesa College. Game one of the afternoon was a tight, low scoring affair that IVC dropped 1-0. The only run of the game came in the fourth inning as San Diego Mesa infield Carissa Topolinski tripled then scored on an IVC error. This unearned run would turn out to be the game winner as IVC offense scuffled and the team was shut out for the first time all season. The highlight of game one for IVC was in the circle as Yeraldine Carrion continued her dominant pitching streak. Carrion threw a masterful complete game, striking out 12, walking just two, and allowing only a single hit with no earned runs. This moves Carrion's stat line for the season to 32 innings pitched while amassing 74 strike outs.
IVC's bat's came alive in game two of the doubleheader as the team collected 13 hits. Melissa Flores, Camila Carrasco, Shaylinn Mays, and Taylor Marini each collected a pair of hits in game two. One of Flores' two hits went for extra bases while both of Camila Carrasco's hits were doubles. Defense was clean on both sides of the ball as neither team made an error. IVC's pair of big innings proved to be the difference as Imperial put up four runs in the first and four runs in the fourth inning. Carrion closed game two out in the circle throwing 2 scoreless innings, striking out 3 and facing the minimum number of batters.
With this double header split Softball moves to 2-1 in conference play and puts the team in second place. The season continues with an away double header on Friday, March 11th at Palomar College who is currently 1-0 in conference and 15-2 on the year. Softball returns home on March 16th for a single home game vs Southwestern. All fans attending March 16th's home game must fill out the prescreening form through the IVCSafe app and will have their temperature taken while arriving on campus.
