The Pacific Coast Athletic Conference has selected Palomar College golfer Jacob Montes and Imperial Valley baseball pitcher Cesar Bermudez as its Men's Athletes of the Week for March 23rd through April 1st.
Montes, a freshman out of three-time state champion San Diego Torrey Pines High School, where he was an honor student (3.75 grade-point average), medaled for the second time this season with a 71, El Dorado Golf Course in Long Beach, as the Comets defeated runner-up College of the Desert, the PCAC's first-place team, by 17 strokes a conference match. Previously, Montes carded a 69 to medal in the Southern California Preview Tournament, which brought all of the SoCal Region's best teams to Bakersfield Country Club, on March 5th. He now leads conference golfers with a 72.8 average.
Montes also played football for Torrey Pines as a running back and outside linebacker.
Bermudez, a sophomore right-hander from Central High School in El Centro, pitched a complete-game 5-hit shutout, striking out 6 batters and walking 2, as the Arabs defeated visiting College of the Desert 12-0 , avenging an 18-4 loss the previous day at Palm Desert.
Bermudez was a two-time San Diego Union Tribune All-Academic Team honor student at Central High School with a 3.93 grade-point average as a junior in 2015 and a 3.85 grade-point average when he was a senior in 2016.
Montes is coached by Mark Halda at Palomar, while Bermudez's coach at Imperial Valley is Jim Mecate.
